Charges laid in sports car theft

A 23 year old Lloydminster man has been taken into custody, following a fiery crime spree last week.

On Thursday, the Maidstone RCMP detachment were made aware of an incident unfolding in the Lloydminster area. According to Constable Ryan Reid of the Maidstone RCMP, the call came in around 2:50 p.m., advising police of an erratic driver on Highway 303. Shortly after that first call, a second came in advising the detachment that the driver had crashed, and rolled.

Reid indicated the vehicle in question was a black Porsche Cayenne, driven by 23 year old Daniel Fenrich of Lloydminster. After Fenrich rolled in the vehicle, it burst into flames, burning into a wreck. Reid also said residents of the farm that Fenrich had rolled onto tried to provide medical aid after he escaped the wreck, but instead of staying, he stole their truck.

“They were trying to get him the medical assistance that he obviously required,” said Reid.

“They were trying to do their best to get him what he needed, and he stole their truck.”

The stolen truck was later found burnt on August 27, near Perch Lake, Sask, north of Paradise Hill.

106.1 The Goat also spoke to Bill Cal, an eyewitness to the incident. According to Cal, there had been blood on the burnt car, as well as cash and drug scales littering the ground around the wreck. Cal had come across the scene of the incident while traveling along the highway, and got out of his vehicle to assist.

“I’m just a helpful kind of guy,” said Cal.

“If there were bodies there, I would do what I can to save lives. That is not the first accident I’ve been first on the scene with. That’s just the right thing to do, if somebody needs help then you go and help them. I figured if he was trapped in the car, he might need to be pulled, so I ran down there, but he wasn’t down there. He had already gone up to the house and stole the truck.”

Fenrich has now been charged with five counts in relation to the incident by the Maidstone RCMP, with charges pending from the Lloydminster detachment as well. He was taken into custody in the early hours of August 28 in Lloydminster.

Reid said the five counts from Maidstone are one count of theft of a motor vehicle, one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of driving while disqualified, and one count of creating a common nuisance.

An unnamed female has also been charged with aiding and abetting Fenrich in relation to the incident, but Reid said her name will not be released as the charges have not yet been formally laid.

Fenrich will be appearing in Saskatchewan-side court in Lloydminster on September 1 to deal with the charges.
