Lloydminster to conduct 2026 Point-in-Time Homeless Count, October 21

The City of Lloydminster is preparing to conduct its 2026 Point-in-Time (PiT) Homeless Count on Wednesday, Oct. 21, gathering information to provide a clearer picture of homelessness in the community and guide future planning efforts.

The count will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. and is part of a federally coordinated initiative that measures homelessness in communities across Canada. Lloydminster has been selected as one of a small number of rural communities participating in the national enumeration effort.

A PiT Count provides a snapshot of the number of people experiencing homelessness at a specific point in time. Communities use the data to better understand the extent of homelessness and the experiences and characteristics of people who are unhoused.

The City will conduct a full count using both survey and enumeration methods. The effort will include people staying in emergency shelters and transitional housing, those within health and correctional systems, and individuals staying in unsheltered locations such as encampments, abandoned buildings, alleys and streets.

City officials have been working with local organizations and community groups to share information about the upcoming count and support participation. Information collected during the one-day initiative will help inform future responses to housing and social service needs in Lloydminster.

The most recent PiT Count was conducted on Oct. 23, 2024, in partnership with local service providers. That count identified approximately 246 people experiencing homelessness in Lloydminster. Of those surveyed, 91 per cent said they wanted to transition into permanent housing, while low income and high rental costs were identified as the most common barriers to securing housing.

Results from the 2024 Point-in-Time Homeless Count are available through the City’s housing needs assessment resources. Residents seeking more information about the 2026 count can contact Social Programs and Services at 780-875-6184 ext. 2909 or by email at fcss@lloydminster.ca.

Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
