$2.6 million announced for new fertilizer facility in Neilburg

Lloydminster and District Co-op has announced an investment in Neilburg.

Officials said over $2.6 million is being invested to replace the existing fertilizer system with a modern, state-of-the-art fertilizer facility in the Saskatchewan village.

Co-op said preparation of the site will start this fall, and the installation of bulk fertilizer bins is expected to start in the spring.

Officials said the new facility will offer local producers improved service, greater product flexibility, increased efficiency, and enhanced safety.

Co-op noted that a key component of the project is an advanced, eight-bin volumetric blending system, which will allow for a wider range of fertilizer products, such as micronutrients and slow-release nitrogen.

Additionally, the Neilburg site will feature a Procote treatment system, allowing for fertilizer options that are “increasingly sought after by today’s producers”, according to Co-op. Other improvements include a new fertilizer office, upgraded load-in and load-out systems, conveyors, site grading, drainage enhancements, and improved traffic flow throughout the location.

“This new fertilizer plant represents a significant investment in both our agricultural infrastructure and the Neilburg community,” said Kara Johnston, Director of Agro Operations.

“Our goal is to ensure our members have reliable, timely access to the products they need and trust, particularly during the critical windows of the growing season.”

Johnston added, “Just as importantly, this facility is being designed with the flexibility to accommodate new technologies and innovative fertilizer products as agricultural practices continue to evolve. This investment reflects our long-term commitment to supporting local producers and strengthening our service capabilities as we strive to exceed the expectations of members in our region.”

The facility will include automated blending technology, a bucket elevator receiving system, and overhead load-out scales. Officials noted that the design will also eliminate the need for loaders to operate inside the blending shed, which will create a safer and more efficient working environment.
