Sandra Jansen crosses the floor to Alberta NDP

Sandra Jansen is changing her party.

The now-former Progressive Conservative MLA made a joint announcement of the move with Premier Rachel Notley on Thursday afternoon. Two weeks before, she had been in the running for the leadership of the PC’s, but dropped out after saying she had been harassed and intimidated by another candidate’s campaign.

Jansen had been with the PC’s for the last 30 years, and was elected in 2008.

The interim leader of the PC’s, Ric McIver, has wished Jansen well in her new role with the government. The exit of Jansen from the PC caucus leaves the party with eight seats in the Alberta legislature, while the NDP holds 55 of the 87 seats.
