RM of Britannia to retain BWFD fire hall

The RM of Britannia will be keeping the former fire hall of the Britannia-Wilton Fire Department.

According to Councilor Kim Schindel with the RM, Britannia will be keeping the hall for the use of their fire department, which sprang from the ending of the BWFD. The former joint service was set to be dissolved at the end of 2016, after the RM of Wilton decided to create the Legacy Regional Protective Service.

Schindel also said the process of sorting out equipment is still ongoing, with some of the equipment in the hall set to be sold and some to be replaced. She did not have exact details on which equipment items would be going where.

She also said the official dissolution date for the BWFD was moved up to December 1, as opposed to the original date of December 31.

“Everything just fell into place, and the two departments were ready to go on their own separately, so it seemed beneficial to just go ahead and wind things up,” said Schindel.

Schindel said a press release with additional information is set to be released towards the end of November.

According to the chief of the LRPS, Kevin Shortt, the service will be moving to a temporary home at the Point Grey Centre, located along 40 Avenue in Lloydminster.

They will also have an additional bay in a StoreRight building, which is under construction near the intersection of 40 Ave and 12 Street, in the southeast end of the Border City.
