Teenagers in custody following Maidstone auto thefts

Two young men have been arrested, after an early-morning car theft led to a highway crash.

According to the Maidstone RCMP, the incident took place early Monday morning. The police had responded to complaints of auto theft in Maidstone, prior to the crash taking place.

The suspects in the matter were involved in a collision at the intersection of Highway 16 and 21, after two stolen vehicles collided with one another. One of the vehicles, a blue Ford pickup, was abandoned at the scene. The second truck, a white Dodge, was left west of Paynton. Both had been stolen from Maidstone.

After the assistance of the Battlefords Police Dog Services, a 14 year old male was arrested without incident. A 16 year old male was arrested with assistance from the Battlefords RCMP, and a third vehicle, which was also stolen from Maidstone, was recovered in the Battlefords.

In the wake of the incident, the Maidstone RCMP are reminding the public about the importance of securing their vehicle keys, as well as keeping the outdoors well lit. Suspects in the case are also still believed to be at large.

Those currently in custody will not be identified, due to their status as youth. Formal charges are expected to be laid in the matter.
