This years Relay for Life raised over $40, 000 for The Canadian Cancer Society, which aims to improve cancer survival, decrease the incidence of cancer and improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their caretakers.
There were 17 teams this year, up from last years amount according to Relay for Life Committee Member Jackie Mohrbutter.
“Last year there was only 10 teams and this year we had 17 teams, so there was actually more teams and more participants.”
Mohrbutter decided to get involved this year for a reason close to her heart.
“The reason I did it is our son is now 10 years cancer free, so he’s my main reason. He had a stem cell transplant, the stem cell transplant is a new thing with cancer research so that enabled him to be a healthy 25 year old.”
Jaydon Gartner, a Relay for Life Participant was also there in support of a loved one.
“My mom, she recently got diagnosed with breast cancer and she just got her last treatment done today. So it means a lot because it means people do care and want to get rid of some cancer and to treat it.”
Kalina Barlow the Fundraising Specialist for the Canadian Cancer Society in Saskatchewan says it was really exciting to see the whole event come together.
“At the beginning of the year we were a little nervous with the amphitheater potentially to be under construction so we kind of redid the layout of the event this year and it’s working out really well.”
Even though the layout did have to be changed, Mohrbutter says it worked out for the better.
“It really worked well because everyone was kind of in one place and you could kind of hear the DJ and everything that was going on, so I think it worked a lot better.”
Mohrbutter adds that they will be looking to keep the Relay for Life at Bud Miller Park for next year, as it has been there for the past 16 years, but the layout is still to be decided.
