The city will be trying to sharply reduce driving accidents with the Vision Zero project.
Vision Zero’s goal is “no fatalities and no serious injuries through road traffic collisions” by setting causality and injury reduction goals and increasing resources towards road safety improvement.
Lloydminster is starting the program with help from the provincial government. The Border City was approved for the Alberta Traffic Safety Fund, which will provide $17,000 dollars towards Vision Zero.
“This grant is a major step forward to ensure that our roads are among the safest in the world. Even one serious injury or fatality on our roadways is too many and I am proud to count our city among those taking proactive steps to aim for zero.” says Mayor Gerald Aalbers.
Vision Zero has already been set up in cities worldwide and was adopted nationally by the Canadian Council of Motor Transportation in 2016.
