Lloydminster RCMP cautioning residents to not leave Christmas packages unattended

Police are warning residents to keep an eye on their Christmas presents.

The RCMP says that thefts increase this time of year, as vehicles with items inside are broken into or parcels are stolen after being left at someone’s door.

Lloydminster RCMP Constable Grant Kirzinger says there are ways to avoid having presents stolen.

“We just encourage everybody to make sure that you don’t leave presents in a vehicle for a long period of time unattended. If you know a parcel is coming, run home on your lunch break if you can and double check if it’s there.”

Kirzinger also says if someone is the victim of a package theft they should report it to them and the courier immediately with as much detail as possible.

“We’ll do our best to find out what happened to it. If it is something that you can double check with the company to ensure it has been delivered and not delayed is a good approach as well. Unfortunately crimes like this are very difficult, a lot of times people are able to sneak in and out real quick so make sure that you’re being diligent in your ordering process.”

Kirzinger adds that the safest way to protect online deliveries is receiving them by signature only if possible or actually picking them up at a local courier.
