Number of hospitalizations from flu jumps before new year

The final Alberta influenza statistics of 2017 say hospitalizations from the flu have risen by 235 people since December 17th according to the latest AHS update.

So far 867 people have been put in hospital since the beginning of flu season. The death toll has also risen to 19, with the Calgary zone reporting 12 deaths, four in the Edmonton zone, two in the south zone and one in the north.

The central zone, which houses Lloydminster, has not had any deaths this flu season but has seen 49 hospitalizations.

There have been 1,119,958 flu shots given out this season, including 102,107 in the central zone.
