Local athletes among medal winners at 2018 Alberta Winter Games

Lloydminster’s female relay speed skating team will be taking home some silver from the 2018 Alberta Winter Games.

The Games, held in Wood Buffalo, saw young athletes from across the province competing in both winter sports such as hockey, skiing and speed-skating and year round sporting events such as wrestling, gymnastics and synchronized swimming. 23 young athletes from the Border City competed at the Games, the majority of whom competed under the 7th team banner.

The female relay team from Lloydminster were among the highest scoring athletes from Lloydminster, taking home second place in women’s relay speed skating. Ysabelle Balane, Kaylee Kisser, Jayva Anderson and Erika Pollard came together for a score of 666.  Other highlights include Ashe Petrie being a part of the second place Team 6 in women’s hockey, and Darby Robertson taking third with team 7 in the event.

Among the highlights for men’s teams, Brett Stephens took home 4th place for archery, Kade Fendelet and Alexander Russick were on the fifth place winning men’s hockey team for the area, and Lance Rick and Gabe Wennekamp being a part of the sixth finishing men’s relay team.
