Lakeland College named one of Alberta’s top employers for 2018

Lakeland College has been named one of Alberta’s Top 70 Employers for the second consecutive year.

The annual competition recognizes Alberta employers that are leaders in their industry by offering great workplaces. Employers are evaluated in eight criteria’s including physical workplace, work atmosphere and social, health, financial and family benefits and community involvement.

Human Resources Director for Lakeland College Kent Hummelle says being one of the top employers in Alberta reinforces that they are doing the right things with their employment practices.

“I think for us our lifestyle and wellness options we have for people here includes our maternity leave with top ups and extended time unpaid leave absences. So we got a lot of options for people for flexibility in life.”

Lakeland was chosen based on their support for new mothers and maternity leave payments, as well as an on site daycare. They offer a health benefits plan where employees can use $800 per year for health and wellness. They were also recognized for their on site amenities available to staff that include an indoor pool, cafeteria and a quiet room for meditation.

Hummelle says that every year Lakeland does a survey for employment engagement and they try to implement things from that survey to increase employee satisfaction.

“We’ve added some new long service milestones and updated our events to try to celebrate our staff a little bit more.”

Lakeland is one of five post-secondary institutions in the province on the 2018 list.
