President’s Gala gives students opportunities to “take the lead”

Friends and supporters of Lakeland College packed the Lakeland College “Secret Garden” Friday for the annual President’s Gala.

For one night it was converted to a ballroom, so that the school could raise money for it’s “Supporting Our Students” Bursary. Lakeland President Alice Wainwright-Stewart says this bursary is to help students with financial difficulties, who may not be able to attend college without it.

“When you think that one in six students can’t afford to have to a post-secondary education, so the fact that we can have so many donors, they take the lead in helping our students, and it’s really important for helping our students.

In addition to raising money for the students, the event is largely put on and overseen by those students. Wainwright-Stewart says this gives them an opportunity to shine, and shows the donors what the school can do.

“This President’s Gala is just an amazing opportunity for our students, not only to take the lead but it’s also an opportunity for the community to see what Lakeland College can offer students, and how they can support our students.”

Wainwright-Stewart adds that this event will give the community a positive experience and memories about Lakeland College and it’s impact on the students and the Lloydminster and area community.
