Four Lloydminster players to represent Team Alberta in Football Canada Cup

Four players from Lloydminster have made the Team Alberta U18 team that will represent the province at the Football Canada Cup.

There were four camps taking place over four months that whittled down the selection of players from 400 to two teams for Alberta, the U18 and U17. The players that were selected from Lloydminster for U18 team are quarterback Anton Amundrud, running back Nathan Zacharias, defensive back Ethan Mather and on the offensive line Cullen Wagner from Holy Rosary High School (HRHS).

Wagner is a grade 11 student at HRHS and says that he did not expect to get on the team.

“I didn’t really think I would make it, I didn’t have the best try out for the very last one because of a bad finger, but I never really thought I’d amount to that so it was really awesome.”

He adds that on the HRHS football team they’re taught leadership both on and off the field, as well as giving back to the community that supports them.

The Football Canada Cup will be held from July 14-22 in Calgary. In the previous two years, Alberta has finished in fourth place, but is looking to change that outcome. Cullen says that he will show his best efforts during the Cup.

“I really hope that I can show what I got from my talent here and I just want to be the best person I can be as a leader, as an individual and as an player on the field.”

During the camps there were also players selected for the Alberta U17 team that include two people representing Lloydminster. Running back, Matthew Morin and defensive back Kaleb Sommerfeld. The team will be attending a training camp with local high schools in Maui from August 5-12.

Team Alberta U18 team will play their first game against B.C. on July 16 at Shouldice Park on Hellard Field.
