The Lloydminster Fire Department is reminding residents to be mindful around fire safety, after recent grass fires in the area.
On Friday, two grass fires took place, one in the County of Vermilion River and the second within the City. Fire Chief Jordan Newton says the fire in Lloydminster was caused by a train passing through and says that fire crews were able to contain it quickly.
Due to dry conditions and strong winds fires are spreading quickly. There are fire bans issued in surrounding areas, however Lloydminster has not issued one. Newton says bans within in the City are rare.
“Our burning bylaws are very strict when it comes to backyard burning. We do just allow fire pits and remind people to burn within the fire bylaw.”
R.M. of Britannia, R.M. of Wilton, the County of Vermilion River, North Battleford, the R.M. of Mervin and Frenchman Butte have all issued fire bans.
Newton says the fire department has responded to numerous smaller grass fires over the last two weeks that has prompted a reminder to people around playing with fire.
“Remind residents to be extra mindful, especially discarding cigarettes or allowing children to play with lighters and matches in fields.”
