The City is still looking for feedback on regulations around the location of cannabis retail stores.
At Monday’s City Council meeting a public hearing was held, where residents had an opportunity to voice their concerns on the changes proposed in the new bylaw. However, from the sounds of it residents are liking the new rules.
Mayor Gerald Aalbers says it was interesting that no one came forward.
“The Land Use Bylaw changes mainly deal with cannabis and I think that people realize that it’s coming as a federal legislation. What we’ve tried to do is ensure that you won’t see it in residential neighbourhoods being sold. It’s going to have a distance of clearance from schools and health facilities and all those things.”
The new rules will see cannabis retailers at least 100 meters away from any schools following the provincial guidelines set by Alberta.
The City has already held a Your Voice Night and is still welcoming questions and concerns from residents.
“It’s been getting some discussion in the community and hopefully people are getting their answers. If people need some more information we ask them to come down to City Hall and we’ll certainly see someone addresses your concerns,” says Aalbers.
The bylaw is in the process of it’s second and third reading in Council.
