Emotional evening as LCHS Barons celebrate student-athletes

Barons student-athletes celebrate the end of their respective season with awards, laughter and tears.

16 different teams were celebrated at the Lloydminster Comprehensive High School banquet Tuesday evening.

Athletic director and Vice principal at LCHS Doug Smith says every student in the program took something away from the long, hard-fought season and that deserves celebrating.

“It boils down to being apart of that team and where do you fit. Everyone has a role to play that’s the beauty of amateur sport and everyone is equally important. I don’t win a game if only my MVP plays.”

Tuesday evening was also filled with emotion during the announcement of the winners of the William Gow Scholarship.  Gow passed away in 2017 at the age of 57. Gow and his wife Dianne were highly involved in the athletic community of Lloydminster coaching public, collegiate and club volleyball.

The scholarship is based on the academic achievement, dedication, leadership and post-secondary acceptance of a student-athlete. Being the first year of the scholarship, 8 students who Gow had coached joined his wife Dianne in a tearful group embrace as she presented them the honour after a tribute to William Gow.

One of the scholarship recipients was  Grade 12 student Kiana Walker who was named Female Athlete of the year. Walker says the support from LCHS has made her ready for the post-secondary journey.

“I came this far and that I can go a lot further just with my past coaching, my school and everything. It kind of just prepares me for that next step.”

Barons athletes were awarded for most improved, Barons pride, rookie of the year and MVP in their respective sport.
