A former student of Lloydminster Comprehensive High School has been honoured after his passing.
Ian Tiede, a former automotive student and member of the Lloydminster Motor Club passed away in November and was honoured at the school’s annual car and truck show with an award renamed in his memory.
Mechanics and Automotive Teacher Darcy Mcfarlane says the ‘Peoples Choice Award’ is the most prestigious in the show and will be presented annually in memory of Tiede.
“He (Tiede) was an integral part of mechanics and the car and truck show in Lloydminster and our school. It’s a great opportunity to honour him and build a little bit of a legacy for what he brought to our school in the time he was here.”
The award has been renamed to ‘Ian Tiede People’s Choice Memorial Award.’ Mcfarlane says that people vote on which vehicle they like the best and the participant with the most votes receives the award. The award was presented by Tiede’s father Tim and went to grade 11 student Ian Espales.
The Motor Club also honoured Tiede with a donation to his auto mechanics class. After his passing the club took possession of Tiede’s Camero in hopes of fixing it up for graduation, however, the work was too much for the club to take on.
Head of the Lloydminster Motor Club Randy Marsh says instead they’ve taken the money they raised to fix up the car and are going to donate it to the class at the high school.
“The Motor Club itself we like to help out the community where we can, but it was really nice because it was Ian’s passion, from what I heard you couldn’t really go into that class without seeing Ian there.”
Currently, the donation is just over $4,000.
