Lloydminster Comprehensive High School students brought home two gold medals from the National Skills Competition.
About 30 students form the high school competed in the Regional Skills Canada Competition, where 12 students moved on to provincials. Four of the 12 received gold medals and moved onto the national competition, where three students medaled.
Communications Media Teacher Alan Griffith says he is very proud of the students as he watched them progress through the different levels of competition.
“When they go to skills be it provincial or national they get to compete against and work with the students who are the best in their trade in the country. It just elevates things to a whole new level and takes those students up a notch from where they were.”
Grade 12 student Meagan Lee took home gold for the second year in a row for mechanical CADD at Nationals and grade 12 students Kyle Sieben and Glenmar Davila received bronze in video production.
Sieben says they were very surprised when they heard the received a medal, but at the same time were grateful that they were recognized on a national level.
“It helped with confidence in the skill of video production. We learned new techniques on the spot as we were doing our competition. We got out of our comfort zones, we got to interact with new people from around Canada, which was really exciting.”
Grade 11 student Maria Mcintosh won gold in architectural technology at provincials. She says the competition helped her in deciding her future career path.
“Before this, I was very unsure of what I wanted to do and I actually learned everything I had to do at the competition a month beforehand and I worked two hours every single day to practice and doing that every day has really encouraged me to choose this as a career path.”
Mcintosh says she will compete again next year.
