As the FIFA World Cup gets underway bars in Alberta, including Lloydminster can serve alcohol outside of regular serving hours.
The province is providing an extension to liquor service to all places where liquor is served on site throughout the FIFA World Cup, which began Thursday and will end July 15.
President and CEO of the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) Alain Maisonneuve said in a statement that soccer is the world’s most popular sport and as Albertans wake up early or stay up late watching, the AGLC supports the extended liquor hours as 32 teams compete for soccer’s top prize.
The Cup is being hosted in Russia where many games will start early in the City, however, with the extension licenced bars will have the option of serving liquor at the beginning of each game when the games are outside of serving hours.
Currently, in Lloydminster on the Alberta side, there are bars that will be able to take up this option if they see a demand from residents.
