Saskatchewan blue-green algae advisory in effect

The Water Security Agency and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health are asking people to avoid swimming in or drinking water where blue-green algae blooms are occurring.

According to the advisory, the algae happens during calm and hot weather in lakes and reservoirs with shallow, slow-moving or still water with enough nutrients. People are asked to keep their animals away from this water.

The algae blooms are described as a shimmery, foamy pea soup appearance which is usually blue-green, bright blue, grey or tan in colour. The blooms reportedly last up to three weeks and recent warm weather in the province may be the reason for the algae.

The Province warns people that swimming in or drinking this algae-contaminated water can cause red skin, sore throat, cramps or diarrhea. Caution should be taken for consuming any fish or shellfish caught in these areas.

If health symptoms occur call Healthline 811 or contact your health care provider.
