City applying for grant to improve accessibility at LGCC

The city will be applying for a grant that could see a lift and automatic doors added to the Lloydminster Golf and Curling Centre.

The Enabling Accessibility Fund Grant will provide 65 per cent of the funding for the project, which is being estimated at $51,229. The city in return will contribute 35 per cent, which is $17, 930. Mayor Gerald Aalbers says the project is dependent on the approval of the grant application.

“We have an opportunity to do some major improvements to the facility in the way of a lift, as well as automatic opening doors for 35 cents per $1 if the grant is successful. If the grant is not successful we will not be completing the project.”

If the grant money is awarded, the LGCC will see an automatic lift attached to the exterior restaurant stair railing at the north entrance. The facility currently has a ramp that gives access to the restaurant, but it does not meet safety standards.

“I think it’s gonna be an added improvement to the facility. We’ll look forward to administration bringing back some more information as they learn more about it,” says Aalbers.

The city funding will part of the 2019 budget.
