Citizens on patrol looking to reduce crime in Lloydminster

Lloydminster’s Citizens on Patrol Society are looking for more people to join them as they help reduce crime in the city.

The volunteer-run organization act as an extra set of eyes and ears for the RCMP. Recruiter Mike Prosper says their only job is to observe and report.

“We patrol around and any suspicious activity we see or possible drunk drivers we call it into the dispatch then they dispatch it to the RCMP members.”

The organization currently has 12 volunteers and is looking for as many as they can get for the upcoming year. COPS has three vehicles they use for patrolling and each vehicle has two people in it at all times.

Prosper says the patrols don’t always need to be in a vehicle. There are options for biking, as well as just walking around Bud Miller Park for example.

There is no set schedule for the volunteers and currently, they are roaming around in the evening on weekends until 3 a.m.

“We do ask for at least a one-year minimum commitment and a minimum of 10 hours a month that’s including fundraising,” says Prosper.

He adds that in order for people to join the organization they have to be 19 years old and older, clean drivers abstract and have to go through a background check.
