Local farm participating in Alberta open farm days

The Amarula Nubians and Lamb farm will be opening it’s doors this weekend. The farm located near Marwayne will be one of over 100 farms participating in this year’s Alberta open farm days.

The two-day event gives Alberta residents the opportunity to experience farm life and understand where local food comes from. The Nubian family farm specializes in raising sheep and goats. The sheep are used for mainly producing meat and the goats are for dairy, as well as show animals.

Owner Lexie Spahich says this is their first time participating in the event. She says in the past they’ve had people wanting to tour their farm and found this was the right opportunity.

“People will be able to come and see our flock of sheep, place orders if they like for sheep and also be able to see some lambs at that time as well. We’re hoping to have a little bit of a petting zoo so children can come and play with some of the babies.”

Spahich and her husband started the farm seven years ago and now have about 200 sheep and 30 goats. Spahich says they hope to inspire young people and show them a different kind of lifestyle.

“It seems a lot of people are moving to cities these days. We’ll be showcasing a family farm lifestyle. We thought it would be great to have the community and surrounding area and the province of Alberta come to visit and see how a farm is run.”

The farm will be open Sunday between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and people can come anytime between those hours to tour the space. The farm is located on Range Road 30 and there will be signs on the road for directions. For more about the farm visit their Facebook page.
