Terry Fox run set to take place at Bud Miller Park

Registration is still open for this year’s Terry Fox run set for September 16 at Bud Miller Park. The 5 km run is in its 38th year and Lloydminster joined the initiative in 1984.

The run takes place twice a year, first for communities and a second time for schools. Over the year’s the Lloydminster community has raised approximately $161,369 through the run and $176,500 in the school runs. Provincial Director for Saskatchewan Heather MacKenzie says the money goes towards cancer research.

“That money goes to the Terry Fox Research Institute and that money is put into extremely forward thinking, cancer research opportunities all throughout Canada to make a difference in the lives of people who are living with cancer.”

Over 400 communities across Canada participate with over $750 million raised to date. MacKenzie says it’s important to have grassroots communities like Lloydminster carry on Terry Fox’s message.

“He really wanted to raise awareness and $1 per Canadian. School’s and the curriculum and all those things to remember a great Canadian icon is important, but the community runs really show people outside of the school systems still honour Terry.”

To register or to collect pledges go to the organization’s website. Registration starts at 10 a.m. and for more information contact local organizer Heather Klages at 780 875 3321.
