Walk of remembrance set to take place

People who have lost their lives through suicide will be remembered by loved ones at the 8th annual Walk of Remembrance.

The walk is brought to Bud Miller Park each year with the partnership between the Lloydminster Regional Health Foundation, Alberta Health Services and local organizations around the Lloydminster area. Organizing committee member Neil Harris says each year the walk is planned near World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10.

“This year our walk is gonna be held on Saturday, September 15th. It’s partly to recognize World Suicide Prevention Day and a chance for friends and family members to come together and remember a loved one that they have lost to suicide.”

Harris says the walk is not a fundraiser rather. The goal is to promote mental health and wellness.

“A chance to get resources, gain some strength in numbers and gain some support.”

On average, the walk sees 60 to 100 people participate depending on weather and the year. There is no pre-registration necessary, instead, people show up at Bud Miller before the walk starts at 3 p.m. and take part.

Harris says they usually finish around 6 p.m. and each person will be given a carnation as a symbol of remembrance. There will also be entertainment, a guest speaker and snacks at the event.
