Six people named torchbearers in Lloydminster for Canada Winter Games

Two local politicians are among six people in Lloydminster chosen to be torchbearers for the 2019 Canada Winter Games. The torchbearers will participate in the MNP Canada Games Torch Relay that will kick off the largest youth sports tournament in the country.

The relay will start in Ottawa from the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill on October 4 and visit almost 50 communities. The flame will come to Lloydminster on January 9 and continue across the province before arriving in Red Deer for the Opening Ceremony of the games in February.

Over 900 torchbearers were nominated and pared down to just over 100 being selected. On that list is Vermilion-Lloydminster MLA Richard Starke and Battlefords-Lloydminster MP Rosemarie Falk who will join accountant Tyson Armstrong, 20-year resident Cosette Marriott and two others in the relay.

In a statement, MP Falk said the games is a way to showcase the country’s top athletes.

“These athletes are inspiring in so many ways and through the MNP Canada Games Torch Relay, we as torchbearers and community members get to share in their experience. I am honoured to not only have been nominated but to be chosen amongst community leaders in Lloydminster.”

More torchbearers will be named in the next few months leading up to the games.
