The Lloydminster Men’s Shelter is getting ready to house more men for the colder months. Executive Director Valerie Lazicki says they are already seeing a lot more activity in the shelter since the weather turned colder.
“People coming into the lobby for warm soup and we are supplying people with a lot more toques, gloves and warm socks and that sort of thing.”
She says they are running out of warm blankets and coats and are looking to the community for help.
“If you’ve got some old, gently used coats or blankets from your laundry room that you’d like to get rid of, bring them on down to the men’s shelter because we sure could use some.”
The shelter is also receiving support through their Heroes for the Hungry fundraiser, where all the proceeds will go towards the shelter’s operation.
“It’s a great time to come out have your staff Christmas party or just bring some friends, book a table and have a nice night out.”
The fundraiser also includes a 50/50 raffle where the winner is announced at the dinner. Tickets are $60 each or $480 for a table of eight. The event is on November 24 at the Legacy Centre.
Lazicki says the 28-bed shelter will operate at full capacity during the winter.
“Beyond that, we can have people come into the lobby to warm up, get hot soup that kind of thing. We hope we will be able to meet the needs of the community.”
