Small business week kicks off in Lloydminster

Members of the Chamber of Commerce gather with the Border City Rotary Club to kick off small business week.

Across the country, Canadian entrepreneurs will be celebrated along with their contribution to Canada’s economy. Business Development Bank of Canada has been organizing the event since 1979.

The week started off with a lunch hosted by the rotary club and will finish Thursday with the Business Excellence Awards. Chamber President Dabir Naqvei believes that Lloydminster relies heavily on successful and thriving businesses.

“This is a great opportunity for us to celebrate and recognize all the hard work, risk taking, looking after their employees and helping the community in the end.”

Naqvei says small businesses are the backbone of the economy.

“98.2% of all businesses in Canada have fewer than 100 employees. Our Chamber membership is on par with 97.6% having fewer than 100 employees.”

Naqvei will have the privilege of picking this year’s Life Time Achievement recipient at the award ceremony. Business members will be nominated for Employer of the Year, Community Spirit Award, Entrepreneur of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Diversity Award, Integrity Award, Downtown Business of the Year, Customer of the Year and Non-Profit of the Year. The Business excellence awards will take place this Thursday at the Centennial Civic Centre.
