Sober drivers treated in a positive check-stop

Drivers on the ring road were given a sweet surprise Thursday evening, as a reminder to never drive impaired.

Southbound cars on 59 avenue were pulled into a check stop at Fire Hall No. 2. But at this check-stop, drivers were met by RCMP, EMS personnel and Mayor Aalbers reminding them to drive safe this holiday season.

Sober drivers were treated to a candy cane, and Mayor Aalbers was present to remind drivers that impaired driving has costs.

“We often forget, and people have a little too much fun at Christmas,” says Aalbers. “We want to make sure that they aren’t out driving. Because at the end of the day, you risk your own life, you risk impeding your family’s life, as well as your friends, neighbours and citizens.”

Aalbers hopes the check-stop sends a positive message and stressed that there are many ways to avoid drinking and driving.

“We have a series of taxi cabs available, call your friends, call your family.  If you’re going out to a party this Christmas season, make sure you have someone as a designated driver,” said Aalbers. “It’s pretty simple.”
