Tamper-proof license bolts may curb vehicle theft: Lloydminster RCMP

Lloydminster residents may decrease the chances of their vehicle getting stolen by installing tamper-proof license plate screws. Constable Mike Hagel says when the detachment receives the funds the RCMP will have an event where residents can get the anti-theft bolts.

“A lot of times bad guys, when they take a vehicle, like a Ford truck, they will swap the plates out for a clean plate. So we’re hoping with these new screws, that will prevent those thefts from occurring.”

The RCMP is increasing patrols throughout the city to help decrease vehicle theft, Hagel adds that they’re trying to inform residents of preventive measures that can be taken.

“Don’t leave your vehicle running and unlocked, and I know it’s cold outside, install a remote starter if you can if you can’t don’t leave it running too long unattended. A lot of these vehicle thefts are crimes of opportunity.”
