The Prairie North Health Region is urging the public to guard against mosquito bites, due to the increased risk of West Nile Virus.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Mandiangu Nsungu says that mid-July through August is the peak season for the virus.
“While this summer’s predominantly hot dry weather has resulted in fewer mosquitoes overall than in previous years, the wet weather of the past week coupled with warm to hot temperatures forecast for the next while are perfect for the appearance of greater mosquito numbers,” Nsungu explained.
Nsungu also says that the greatest risk of being bitten by mosquitoes carrying the virus is at dusk, overnight, and at dawn. To protect yourself from being bitten, use bug spray containing DEET, wear long sleeves, and going indoors at dusk. The PNHR also recommends removing all sources of standing water from around your home, placing screens on windows and rain barrels, and keeping shrubs, bushes and lawns clear of overgrowth and debris.
