Residents can expect increased traffic enforcement during Speed Awareness Month

Constable Michael Hagel says Lloydminster residents will see a lot more traffic enforcement from RCMP in April during Speed Awareness Month.

“You are going to see a lot more uniform police officers out in the streets, you’re going to see a lot more bylaw vehicles out, we are going to be running a lot more radar.”

Hagel adds there is a possibility of more tickets being handed out throughout the month. RCMP is asking drivers to be cautious now that the snow has melted, reminding people that more braking distance is required the faster you’re going. Increased speed can also cause less reaction time. Hagel says the importance behind all traffic initiatives and laws comes down to safety.

“My number one priority right now is the kids. Students are playing outside, people are coming out from their dens after that cold winter to come out and play. It’s important that we’re slowing down, watching for kids on bikes, watching for kids crossing the street because those kids are not watching for you.”

Police remind residents that the speed limit in school zones and playground zones is 30 km/hr. Drivers are asked to also take caution around construction zones as speeding tickets in those areas will be doubled

“Slow down. Watch for those kids. Make that good decision; I know it’s nice out those roads are really clear, look really good to drive on, just make sure you slow down.”
