Producers begin seeding despite cool weather: Sask Crop Report

Lloydminster farmers begin seeding despite cool weather.  Saskatchewan Agriculture says many producers have begun seeding with more expected to start in the coming weeks.

14 per cent of crops has been seeded in the southwest, and northwest region, which includes the Lloydminster area. According to the crop report, nine per cent of the spring wheat, 10 per cent of the canola, 19 per cent of the lentils and 22 per cent of the field peas have been seeded to date.

Rainfall was reportedly hit areas across the province in the last week, particularly in the northwest and northeast regions. The winter wheat assessment continues as fields green up and temperatures rise. The province says pasture and hay land growth has been slow but is expected to improve, given the recent moisture and favourable weather in the forecast.

Field conditions across the province have not changed much from the previous week. Topsoil moisture on hay land and pasture is rated as one per cent surplus, 53 per cent adequate, 35 per cent short and 11 per cent very short.

The province says farmers continue to seed, work on fields and move cattle.
