Local farmers gain significant seeding progress :Sask Crop Report

Lloydminster farmers have had significant seeding progress in the last week despite cold weather.

Saskatchewan Agriculture says 28 per cent of crops have been seeded in the northwest region, which includes Lloydminster. The seed progress for the area is up 14 per cent from last weeks crop report. Saskatchewan Agriculture says significant progress has been made across the province with 38 per cent of overall crops in the ground between May 7 to 13.

Hay and pasture growth has been slow Due to cool weather and rainfall across the province in the last week. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as one per cent surplus, 52 per cent adequate, 40 per cent short and seven per cent very short. Topsoil moisture on hay land and pasture is rated as 46 per cent adequate, 40 per cent short and 14 per cent very short.

The recent progress is ahead of the five year average (2014-2018) of 31 per cent for this time of year. Winter wheat assessments continue as the temperatures rise and fields green up. The report says farmers are currently busy seeding, working fields, controlling weeds and moving cattle.
