Local farms have few fields left to seed: Sask Crop Report

Local farms only have a few fields left to seed according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. All six crop districts are reporting that 99 per cent of crops are in the ground with some being seeded for green feed and silage.

Rainfall is still needed across the province to help with crop growth and emergence. Hay land and pasture growth have been minimal due to the lack of moisture.

Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 22 per cent adequate, 47 per cent short and 31 per cent very short.  Topsoil moisture on hay land and pasture is rated as 18 per cent adequate, 42 per cent short, and 40 per cent very short.

The crop report says across the province crop conditions range from good to bad with the latter due to strong winds, insects, and the dryness of fields. Farmers are currently applying in-crop pesticides to control weeds and insects.

The current seeding progress is up from the five-year average (2014-18) of 93 per cent for this time of year.
