The Lloydminster & District SPCA is counting its blessings after pet food was stolen from one of its sheds.
Sometime during the night of Friday, June 14, the shed that stores pet food. The shelter found its shed was often broken into regardless of locking it and keeps it under minor locks. Zoey Gray, operations manager at the Lloydminster & District SPCA, says the shelter will often give pet food for owners who are in need.
“If people are asking for food, we will give them food,” said Gray. “But unfortunately, this time someone decided to help themselves to all of it.”
Staff at the SPCA came in on Saturday to find all of the pet food cleared out from their shed. Gray estimates there were about 10 bags of dog food stolen from the shed. Members of the community heard about the incident on social media and immediately took action.
Residents began donating bags of dog food to the shelter. The Lloydminster Fire Fighter’s Association also stepped up to help resupply the SPCA. After all the donations, Gray estimates the community re-supplied the SPCA with more than 50 bags of pet food. Gray says the SPCA is thankful for the show of support from the community.
“It’s such a great feeling knowing the community has our back. When times are tough, and things happen like this, they’ll step up, and we won’t be left in the dust.”
The SPCA accepts further donations at their building in the northwest part of the city. Donations can also be taken to bins at Wal-Mart, Superstore, PetSmart and Pet Valu. Gray says they will always accept dog food and non-clumping cat litter.
