Lloydminster RCMP to hold first ever bike rodeo

The Lloydminster RCMP is inviting the community to attend it’s first ever bike rodeo on Sunday, June 23. The event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Bud Miller Park and will include a bike check, a helmet check, and an obstacle course.

The event is open to all students aged 5 to 12. All participants are required to have a helmet and a helmet check station will be available to ensure a proper fit. Citizens on Patrol (COPS) will be manning the barbecue with all proceeds from food sales going to support COPS.

The RCMP says this bike rodeo could not be accomplished without its community partners; the Lloydminster Catholic School Division, the Lloydminster Public School Division, Citizens on Patrol, and Grindin’ Gears bike shop. The Lloydminster RCMP thanks the community for the continued support of this great cause.

The Alberta Traffic Safety Act indicates that everyone under the age of 18 is required to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle. In addition, the Lloydminster city bylaws require that everyone under the age of 18 wear a helmet within the city limits. Const. Michael Hagel of the Lloydminster RCMP hopes the public remember the importance of wearing a helmet.

“It’s important people understand the reason why a helmet is required,” said Const. Hagel. “It’s no different than wearing a seatbelt when you drive, it can literally save your life one day.”

The RCMP says fines start at $93 for failing to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle.
