The Thorpe Recovery Centre is celebrating its 40th anniversary.
The centre is found just off highway 16 in Blackfoot, and treats people with addictions.
In honour of its anniversary, the centre is hosting Hockey Night in Canada’s Scott Oake as a speaker. Brant Wheeler, member of the centre’s board, says Oake has a connection to addictions.
“Scott and Anne tragically lost their son Bruce to a drug overdose about four years ago,” Wheeler said. “Since that time they’ve been sharing their story, and of course it a tragic story, but one we feel would be very impactful for our group… As he likes to tell me, it’s not a hockey story, it’s a story of addiction and tragedy.”
Tickets to the luncheon are $25, with $15 of each ticket going to the organization’s Health and Wellness Initiative.
“The Health and Wellness Initiative helps our clients shift their focus from addiction to healthier choices in life,” Wheeler said. “[It’s] very impactful for our clients, and very helpful. Of course our whole program is around recovery, and this Health and Wellness Initiative supports that recovery model.”
Tickets can be bought at Verses, Cliff Rose for Clothes, or at the door.
The luncheon is being held on Saturday, September 19, at the centre, starting at 10:30 a.m.
