Inspector Lee Brachmann of the Lloydminster RCMP Detachment presented his update to Mayor and Council during the Governance and Priorities Committee Meeting on Monday, July 15. During his presentation, Insp. Brachmann said there are no observable crime trends for 2019 but made a note that property crime remains consistent.
“Reducing property crime continues to be a detachment priority,” said Insp. Brachmann. “With our new crime reduction unit in place, you will see more uniformed members working in the community.”
There were 1,320 reported incidents of property crime from January 1 to May 31 this year, compared to 1,336 in the same period in 2018. Those numbers include 123 break and enters, 164 vehicle thefts, 411 counts of theft under $5,000, 189 cases of fraud and 349 cases of mischief to property. Mayor Aalbers believes in the Mounties’ work and hopes residents do what they can to help reduce property crime.
“The RCMP have a job to do, however, as citizens there are ways we can assist them,” said Mayor Aalbers. “It’s important as a property owner we ensure our belongings are safely secure and if required, out of sight.”
For 2019, local RCMP aim is to reduce property crime by 10 per cent and vehicle theft by five per cent. The Lloydminster RCMP has seen no significant increase in impaired driving since cannabis legalization.
