Sask. company fined $50K for 2017 workplace injury near Lloydminster

A Saskatoon-based company has been fined $50,000 for a workplace incident that left a worker severely injured. The company pled guilty to one count under Occupational Health and Safety regulations in Lloydminster Provincial Court on July 15.

It was found that the company failed to ensure that only trained operators are required or permitted to operate powered mobile equipment, resulting in serious injury to a worker. Charges stemmed from an incident that occurred on July 26, 2017, at a worksite near Lloydminster. A worker sustained severe injuries when a combine tire fell off a forklift and struck the worker.

The company was fined $35,714.28 plus a surcharge of $14,285.72, for a total of $50,000. One additional charge was stayed. The Saskatchewan Government says employers are required to provide safe and healthy workplaces and must provide information, training and experience necessary for employees to perform their jobs safely.
