With an influx of animals being received during the summer months, the Battleford Humane Society is encouraging residents to donate supplies.
Assistant Manager Jennifer Kaye says the shortage of supplies is because of the number of animals being taken in during the summer months. She says the numbers are less in the colder months due to the lack of strays roaming due to the temperature.
“it’s not so much people not bringing in donations right now, its the fact we have so many animals coming in right now. The turn around rate is huge. We will adopt four out and in a day we will have four or more in.”
The society is currently in need of cat food as they have been receiving an abundance of dog food over the last couple of weeks. The shelter is also in need of toys for the furry friends as they constantly run short. Kaye says the non-profit runs purely on donations from the public.
“We don’t order food or get any kind of pet supplies or food supplies, including litter for the cats, toys, whatever the animals need. We don’t go out to the stores and get any and we don’t have any stores that donate to us unless they got some damaged bags that they can let go out of their stock.”
Currently, the society has 28 dogs and 69 cats in its care. Kaye stresses the need for adoption, not only for the shelter but for the animals that they receive.
“One animal goes out, that animal now has a home so you’re saving that animals life. But, you have also opened up a cage for another animal to be able to come through the door so that we can actually rescue it.”
