SPCA offers free adult cat adoption this weekend

Residents have a chance to bring home a new friend with the Lloydminster and District SPCA’s Adopt-a-thon taking place this weekend. The shelter is joining humane societies across Saskatchewan with free adoptions for adult cats and $50 for kittens.

Community outreach manager Becca Lawrence says the spring is when a lot of cats will find themselves pregnant which causes the large intake of kittens at the shelter.

“I think we still have in the high thirty’s of kittens and moms in foster right now too. I think it’s really just because that springtime  comes along and then during throughout the summer they keep trickling in.”

All cats made available for adoption are spayed or neutered, microchipped and all vaccinations are up-to- date. The shelter is looking to find families for around 20 cats some of which are sheltered at other kennels, such as Petsmart.

“We do have that waiting list and it is full right now, so I mean really, after the event even if we clear out we will completely fill right back up again.”

Lawerence says the shelter finds a large number of homes during  paid adoption events and she believes it will be larger this weekend with the free furry friends.

“We do that questionnaire to make sure that they are going to the right homes. We just get a good group of people coming in that have been waiting for that forever friend and more often than not when we have these events we’ve maybe had a handful of cats come back.

The Adopt-a-thon will take place on August 17th and 18th and Lawrence says adoptions will begin at noon to make it fair for everyone.
