Lloydminster Airport is getting one more upgrade before the end of the year. City council awarded the taxiway rehabilitation project to ASL Paving Ltd. at the regular council meeting on September 23.
The project will rehabilitate the taxiways as well as the walkways between the airport terminal building and the taxiway hold bay. The cost for this part of the project is just over $215,000 and construction is expected to start immediately.
Mayor Gerald Aalbers is concerned whether the construction would finish before winter but feels administration done enough to mitigate the risks.
“We’re working with a contractor that’s worked with the city in the past and from that perspective, I think our engineering team is very aware of the weather and will tackle as much of the project, if not the entire project if Mother Nature cooperates.”
The taxiway rehabilitation is one of several upgrades to the airport’s runway over the past few years. Aalbers expects more work to continue into next year.
“There will be some additional taxiways that administration hopes to bring forward into the budget in 2020 and that should finish off the project,” says Aalbers. “We want to ensure to provide the best possible service but at the same time being mindful of the taxpayers’ dollars and ensuring work gets done over a period of time.”
The taxiway project is expected to be completed by October 31, 2019.
