Vermilion residents are being asked to step into the shoes of those living on a low income through a poverty simulation.
The Kalyna Country Primary Care Network is trying to raise awareness on poverty and will be hosting a poverty simulation in Vermilion on November 21. It is a part of a pilot project to reduce the impact of financial strain in the healthcare system.Â
The event will start with a short film about the relationship between healthcare and poverty. Attendees will then be given a certain amount of money and will have to budget their money for the month. They will have to balance their spending between food, medication and other costs as they learn the realities of the lives of people in need.
The simulation looks to change perspectives and bring feelings of empathy to those living on a low income. The simulation is brought to Vermilion by the PCN and United Way who brings to communities across the province.
The event will take a donation of non-perishable foods as a registration fee and will be held at the Vermilion Regional Centre with registration opening at 8:30 a.m. Registration is open until November 14 and those interested can contact the Kalyna Country PCN at 780-853-6966.
