With provincials behind them, six Lloydminster boxers aren’t slowing down and are moving ahead to their next match.
Six youths from the Lloydminster Boxing Club went to provincials in Weyburn on Saturday. Alexandra Brochu brought home the provincial trophy in the 57-kilogram division up against Keely Hartell of the Sandhills Boxing Club.
Gabe Wood lost by split decision in the 60-kilogram division. Iris Fryingpan from Frog Lake also lost her match by decision in the 56-kilogram class.
Head Coach Devon Burgess says he feels the boxers did a good job in their bouts.
“Whether they win or lose as long as they know they’ve done their best, they usually feel really good about themselves even if they lost. It’s usually a pretty good night unless someone loses badly but that doesn’t usually happen.”Â
Three of the boxers had no opponents in their weight class or age which gave them a win by default. They were able to find a match in other weight divisions for an exhibition match.
“Some of the boxers we have are at a higher level and it’s hard sometimes to find bouts in Saskatchewan for them so we have to travel to different provinces.”
Burgess says the club has the most competitors in Saskatchewan and continues to grow.
“We’re the number one club in Saskatchewan right now. There’s another club in North Battleford, Four Corners Boxing Club, that’s been doing really well as well. We’ve been matching up our guys with theirs lately and having good bouts but we have a great competitive team.” Â
Burgess says two of the boxers are headed to Saskatoon for a Pro-Am event on November 29 including Fryingpan who will be able to avenge her split decision loss. Some will be going to St. Albert for another card and others will be in Saskatoon for a training camp.
