Father Gorman Community School celebrates all aspects of literacy along with some special guests. Throughout Literacy Day on January 24th students celebrated through a variety of subjects such as science and math.
Principal Scott Young says children were spread out in the hallways with their parents as they spent quality time reading during lunchtime.
Classrooms also gathered around as guests ranging from politicians such as Mayor Gerald Aalbers to business owners read to students and explain their role in the community. Young says each year the event evolves in terms of what guests will be doing during the day.
“Of course they know what teachers do, but they like to hear what a certain visitor is doing. We got firefighters to come in so undoubtedly the kids are going to be excited about what those firefighters do and then those firefighters will be able to enforce that message about literacy.”
Young believes the guests gain an insight into what the school is learning as well as the excitement brought on from the students.
“I think we forgot about elementary school some times and what it was like because we’re adults, we have jobs. I think elementary has a little magic. This is the place where we get Christmas fever and we get to be introduced to those books that are really exciting. It’s nice that adults in the community can come in and see that too.”
With enrolment increasing and parents having multiple kids going through, Young says the annual event has grown tremendously since its inception over a decade ago.
Literacy Week takes place in Saskatchewan on January 26th with Family Literacy Day and running until February 1st.
