30 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Saskatchewan

UPDATE, March 28th, 10:04 P.M: The Saskatchewan Government has released information that there are now 11 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Central zone. The article has been changed to reflect that information.

The Saskatchewan Government has confirmed 30 new cases of COVID-19 in the province.

In their Saturday update, the province says they are now at 134 cases. The latest information shows that there are eleven new cases in the Central Zone (the area housing Lloydminster and surrounding towns) one of which has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

At least seven cases around Saskatchewan are believed to be from community transmission, while the others are travel-related or were transmitted in large gatherings. Health officials believe that a number of the North and Central Zone cases can be traced back to a March 14th snowmobile rally in Christopher Lake. So far 18 more cases have been connected to that event. All of those people are currently self-isolating at home.

The Government has also announced the Saskatchewan Health Authority is deploying more staff to help with contact tracing. They say this will allow them to both detect and follow up on cases quicker, as well as prevent further transmission.

Over 8,248 COVID-19 tests have been performed by the Roy Romanow Provincial Laboratory. More than 25,000 telephone assessments also were performed by Saskatchewan physicians since the March 13th opening of that service.
