One new case confirmed in the MD of Wainwright, 239 new cases in Alberta

There are 239 new cases of COVID-19 in the province which includes 135 probable cases from the past three days.

The provincial total is now at 2,397 cases with 1,124 of them listed as recovered.

Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says it’s concerning that 400 cases are being considered to come from community transmission from unknown sources.

Three more cases were found in the Central zone since April 14, bringing the total in the zone to 77. One active case has been found in the MD of Wainwright. The County of Vermilion River and Lloydminster remain at one recovered case each.

No new deaths have been recorded in the past 24 hours.

Premier Jason Kenney says a highlight continues to be the low rate of hospitalizations in the province. As of April 17, 60 people are in hospital while 13 are in the ICU due to COVID-19.

The province has expanded testing to include anyone exhibiting cold or flu like symptoms and all patients and staff at continuing care facilities experiencing an outbreak. In the past day, 3,831 tests were completed in Alberta with a total of 89,000 tests done. In the Central zone, 8,275 were completed.
