SGI partially re-opening driving tests for key sectors

Saskatchewan Government Insurance is re-opening some driver’s tests for members of key industries.

Starting Monday, May 11th, Class 2,4 and 5 licensing tests will be re-opened for essential workers within the health care and agriculture sectors. There will be a limited number of these tests available due to strict health guidelines and equipment limitations.

Tests will also look different for the time being due to the need to maintain physical distancing. If someone is taking a class 5 test, students will be accompanied by a licensed driver from their own household. This is not needed for class 2 and 4. This supervising person is only there as a safety precaution, and cannot help the driver pass the test.

The driving instructor will follow in another car and communicate with the student through hands-free technology or BlueTooth. They will also be provided with a dashcam for observation. Students will receive notice of their pass or fail within the next day by phone or email.

Class 1 and 3 trucking tests, under the same restrictions, were opened on April 20th. Class 1 and 3 road tests are available in Regina, Saskatoon, Swift Current, Prince Albert, North Battleford, and Yorkton.

The restrictions will be re-evaluated as physical distancing guidelines are adapted.
